Bird Pests
According to the Australian Pest Control Association, the following birds found in Perth, Western Australia are considered "pest" species:
- Feral pigeons
- Seagulls
- Galahs
In particular, feral pigeons are a recognized pest that is very common in areas of human habitation. A descendant of the domestic homing pigeons introduced by European settlers, feral pigeon flocks have increased in numbers and are now prevalent in both urban and country landscapes due to the availability of food, fresh water and secure breeding sites.
Pigeons harbour many diseases, which can be spread through droppings or via respiratory droplets, as well as ectoparasites such as mites.

Pigeon Problems
As well as being a general nuisance, pigeons can also:
- Cause blocked gutters, resulting in fire hazards or water damage
- Attract other pests, such as cockroaches, ticks and rats
- Damage property by roosting or breeding in joists or roof spaces
- Corrode infrastructure, due to the highly acidic nature of pigeon droppings
- Cause damage to roof-top machinery such as air-conditioning units
- Introduce weeds via pigeon droppings
- Be a trip hazard (pigeon poop is slippery!)
You can tell you have a pigeon problem if there are at least one or two pigeons frequently around your property, or you notice an accumulation of pigeon droppings.
Bird Control
Research has shown that culling as an exclusive means of controlling birds has its limitations as a long term control strategy.
Implementing non-lethal control techniques is the most effective long term solution to reducing the pigeon population!

Eagle Eye
The Eagle Eye is an optical bird scarer that harmlessly deters birds from unwanted areas by making use of light beams reflected from direct sunlight. The reflective pyramid rotates sending the beams around in a menacing pattern. The light spectrum reflected back by the Eagle Eye and Flash Flag disorient birds in flight by limiting their vision significantly. This causes the bird to deviate in flight and fly to another destination.

Bird Netting
Finding humane and effective ways to deal with problem birds for businesses can be a full-time occupation for any owner.

Lethal control techniques
Lethal control techniques achieve number reduction and elimination in some situations.
Chemical control
As licensed Pest Management technicians we are approved to use a painless narcotic agent (Alpha-chloralose) which the birds eat and then go to sleep.
The birds will be collected while they are asleep. They are then humanely dispatched (removed). Again, you must remember to remove all sources of food otherwise the exercise may be pointless.
Shooting
Licensed Pest Management technicians can in some circumstances cull pigeons with a firearm to reduce pigeon numbers. This method is effective where pigeon numbers are low and other options of control are limited.
Bird Trapping
In many instances trapping does not have a long term effect on the pigeon population. The number of birds caught and killed during trapping operations can be replaced as quickly as the birds are removed.
If you decide to implement a trapping programme to remove resident pigeons the source of any other food must be removed, otherwise the trapping exercise may be pointless.
